Kaunas Central Post Office

Kaunas Central Post Office is a five-story building featuring curved strip windows and modernist architectural elements. The facade integrates functional design with refined proportions, creating a distinctive presence in the urban streetscape.

Construction started in 1930 during the Year of Vytautas the Great, designed by architect Feliksas Vizbaras. The ambitious project combined contemporary postal needs with symbolic national significance for the newly independent state.

Inside, paintings depicting Lithuanian subjects and traditional crafts like woven textiles from the Skapiškis region decorate the walls. These details reflect the connection between daily services and local artistic expression.

Entry is through the main facade, clearly signaling the building's public function. Visitors should plan to view the interior during regular postal office hours when the space is open to the public.

Between 1978 and 1980, the upper windows were converted into stained glass panels decorated with zodiac signs. This rework shows how the building was reimagined during the Soviet period, adding an unexpected artistic layer to the modernist structure.
