Church of St. George

The Church of St. George is a Gothic brick structure in Kaunas Old Town featuring tall spires and pointed arches throughout. Its interior displays ribbed vaults and Late Gothic design elements typical of the regional building tradition.

The church was founded in 1487 when Stanislovas Sendzivojevičius donated the land, replacing an earlier wooden building with a brick structure completed in 1502. It became part of a larger religious complex that shaped the city's spiritual life for centuries to come.

The name honors Saint George, a patron saint held in local devotion throughout the centuries. The building served as a spiritual center where the community gathered for worship and life milestones.

The church sits in the Old Town near Kaunas Castle and is easy to reach for visitors exploring the historic area on foot. The location allows you to visit nearby sights in the same walking area without extra travel.

The building was designed by Michael Enkinger from Danzig, an architect who created several significant religious structures of that era. It formed part of a Bernardine ensemble, showing how local leaders brought skilled builders from abroad for major projects.
