Vytautas the Great Bridge, Steel bridge across Nemunas River in Kaunas, Lithuania
Vytautas the Great Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Nemunas River and linking the Aleksotas district to the Old Town. It stretches about 257 meters long and 15 meters wide, serving as a primary crossing for traffic between these two areas.
The bridge opened in 1930 as part of Lithuania's interwar development efforts. It was damaged during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in 1948 by architect Levas Kazarinskis.
The bridge is named after Grand Duke Vytautas, a figure central to Lithuanian identity and remembered through everyday infrastructure. Crossing here connects not just two districts but ties locals to their historical roots.
The bridge features accessibility options and includes a retraction mechanism to handle high water levels. Visitors crossing at different times of day will find varying levels of activity depending on local traffic patterns.
Before 1915, the areas on either side of this river crossing used different calendar systems, meaning crossing here symbolically spanned thirteen days. This quirk reflects the complex history of border regions before standardized timekeeping.
