Museum of the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy, Medical history museum in Town Hall Square, Kaunas, Lithuania
The Museum of the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy occupies a carefully restored merchant house dating to the 16th century located on Town Hall Square. The building holds an extensive collection of instruments from medical practices, pharmacy equipment, and medical devices spread across multiple floors.
A medical professor founded the institution in 1936 using his personal collection to preserve knowledge of Lithuanian healing practices. After its establishment, the museum relocated several times before settling in its current Town Hall location in 1987.
The collection reveals how medical care evolved and shaped daily life for people in Lithuania across generations. The displays connect practical healing methods with the craftsmanship of apothecaries and doctors from different periods.
Visitors can navigate through three floors with clear pathways and organized displays that trace the progression of medical tools over time. The layout flows logically from earliest instruments to more recent equipment, making it easy to follow the development of medical practice.
Among the objects on display is a reconstructed early dental office featuring period-authentic furniture and instruments from the 20th century. There is also a recreated historical pharmacy shopfront showing how remedies and medications were once presented and sold to the public.
