Panemunė bridge, Concrete bridge in Kaunas, Lithuania.
The Panemunė bridge is a concrete structure crossing the Nemunas River in Kaunas with four traffic lanes and a width of about 21 meters. The roadway is supported by reinforced concrete pillars spaced along its length of about 273 meters.
The original structure was built in 1957 and served as a key traffic link for decades. It was completely rebuilt in 2012 because the old structure had become unsafe with age.
The bridge connects different parts of Kaunas and helps residents move easily between neighborhoods on both sides of the river. It is simply part of how people navigate their city.
The bridge carries vehicle traffic and connects roads on both sides of the river. Pedestrians and cyclists should check if separate paths are available before crossing.
When rebuilding, five of the original seven support pillars were kept, showing how the new structure partially rests on the old foundation. This was an interesting balance between keeping parts of the past and building modern capacity.
