Molavėnai hillforts, Archaeological complex with two hillforts in Nemakščiai Eldership, Lithuania.
Molavėnai consists of two separate fortified hills linked by a series of ditches and earthen embankments running along the Šešuvis River. The site features a multi-level defensive system with terraced areas on both fortifications.
The first fortification was built in the 1st century AD with wooden defenses that remained in use for centuries. Both sites were gradually abandoned as erosion and changing conditions made habitation difficult.
The hillforts display pottery and everyday objects that reveal how people lived over many centuries. You can observe how communities adapted to the landscape and how their crafts and routines evolved through time.
The site is accessible via marked trails that lead to both fortifications, allowing for straightforward exploration. Visit during drier months when paths are more stable and visibility across the landscape is clearer.
The northwest section of the first fortification features a double defensive system with multiple terraced levels, a design that sets it apart from other fortified sites in the region. This layout demonstrates the advanced planning skills of its builders.
