Fischbach Castle

Fischbach Castle, Medieval castle in Fischbach, Luxembourg

Fischbach Castle is a stone fortress perched on a hill in central Luxembourg, featuring multiple towers and fortified walls throughout its structure. The building displays traditional architectural elements typical of medieval strongholds adapted over the centuries.

The Abbey of Echternach originally controlled the estate until 1050, when Udo of Fischbach became its first lay proprietor. This shift from religious to secular ownership marked a turning point in the site's development.

The castle serves as a Grand Ducal residence and represents the enduring link between the ruling family and the nation. It embodies the continuity of monarchy within Luxembourg's governance and traditions.

The castle remains a private residence of the Grand Ducal family and does not offer public access to the interior. Visitors can appreciate the exterior architecture and hilltop setting from outside the property.

During World War II, the German occupation forces repurposed the castle as Künstlerheim Fischbach, housing artists during the war years. This unexpected episode shows how the fortress became entangled in one of Europe's darkest chapters.
