Esch-sur-Sûre Dam, Hydroelectric power station and arch dam in Esch-sur-Sûre, Luxembourg
The Esch-sur-Sûre Dam is an arch dam stretching 168 meters across the Sauer River with a height of 47 meters. The structure varies in thickness from 1.5 to 4.3 meters (5 to 14 feet) and houses two Francis turbine generators in the adjoining power station.
Construction started in 1955 and the dam officially opened on January 1, 1957. This infrastructure project transformed the region and enabled electrical power generation for the country.
The dam created Upper Sûre Lake, which changed the local setting and became a place where people gather for water activities and outdoor enjoyment. Today the lake draws both residents and visitors who come to spend time by the water.
The dam is visible and accessible from several paths in the area for those wanting to explore the surroundings. Visit in good weather when trails are dry and you have clear views of the lake and structure.
The lake is drained periodically for maintenance work, including 1969 for installing a fixed water intake and 1991 for algae control. These operations show how the facility is continuously monitored and maintained to work properly.
