Schuttbourg, Medieval castle ruins in Kautenbach, Luxembourg.
Schuttbourg is a stone castle that stands on a narrow slate ridge at 327 meters elevation, overlooking the Clerf stream valley between Consthum and Kautenbach. The ruins still show recognizable structures of residential areas and defensive elements embedded in the steep landscape.
The site was first documented in the 15th century and changed ownership several times, including to the Lords of Fischbach and later the Lords of Clerf. Damage from World War II significantly affected the structure.
The structure displays a mix of fortress and Renaissance features that reflect the military and residential needs of medieval Luxembourg nobility. This architectural blend is visible in how the remaining walls and spaces are organized.
The property remains privately owned and can only be viewed from outside, with inquiries directed to the Administration Communale de Kiischpelt. Access is via an overgrown forest road, which can make exploration difficult.
Two engineers currently own the property and have installed scaffolding, suggesting possible reconstruction efforts may be underway. This could mean the site may undergo significant changes in the coming years.
