Septfontaines Castle, Medieval castle in Septfontaines, Luxembourg.
Septfontaines Castle is a fortified stronghold in the Eisch Valley featuring a prominent Renaissance tower alongside medieval stone walls from multiple construction periods. The building displays layers of architecture that reflect changes made over several centuries of occupation.
The castle is first mentioned in 1192 under the ownership of Lord Tider of Seven Born, then passed under Princess Ermesinde's control during the medieval period. Over time it became a key stronghold in the region's feudal system.
The castle forms part of the Valley of Seven Castles, a collection of medieval fortifications that shaped Luxembourg's architectural and noble heritage.
The castle remains in private hands and cannot be entered by visitors, but its exterior is clearly visible from the village below. An audio guide through the Letzebuerg West mobile application provides information from outside the grounds.
The northern entrance was redesigned in 1600 with a Renaissance tower built by Christoph von Criechingen, marking a distinct shift away from the medieval architecture of the earlier structures. This addition shows how the fortress evolved to match contemporary building trends.
