Sigulda

Sigulda is a town in the Gauja River valley with steep rocky formations and red Devonian sandstone cliffs rising throughout the landscape. Several medieval castles and natural caves are embedded within these geological features, creating a distinctive terrain.

The town emerged around 1207 when medieval castles were built in the valley to establish control over the region. These fortress structures shaped the area's importance for centuries and remain prominent features today.

Sigulda hosts an annual summer opera festival held within castle ruins, drawing visitors who come for music and outdoor performances. The town has become known for celebrating local traditions and seasonal events that bring people together throughout the year.

The town is walkable, with main attractions located relatively close to each other within the valley. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes due to uneven terrain and steep paths in the area.

A nearby cave contains inscriptions from the 17th century left by earlier visitors exploring the valley. These carved marks provide glimpses into past travelers and their experiences here.
