Meanders of the Upper Daugava, Nature park near Daugavpils, Latvia
The Meanders of the Upper Daugava form nine distinct river loops that wind through the Latgale region, creating deep valleys with steep slopes along their natural course. The river constantly shifts direction as it cuts through the landscape, shaping the terrain around it.
The river valley contains archaeological remains from ancient Baltic tribes, Vikings, and crusaders who lived in this region for thousands of years. Each group left their mark on the landscape over different time periods.
Traditional wooden villages dot the landscape, and Orthodox churches as well as ancient burial grounds show the varied cultural heritage of this region. These elements shape how the area looks and feels today.
You will need your own transportation to explore the park, since public transit options are limited in this area between the towns. Planning ahead makes it easier to visit the different river bends and viewpoints.
The Vasargelisku viewing tower stands six stories tall and offers sweeping views across all the river bends. The entire landscape was shaped by glacial forces roughly 15,000 years ago, long after the ice melted away.
