The Rainis and Aspazija House, museum in Latvia
The Rainis and Aspazija House is a museum in central Riga housed in two 19th-century buildings connected by a small courtyard. The rooms display the living and working spaces of the poets with period furnishings and personal objects preserved from their era.
The poets Rainis and Aspazija moved into this house in September 1926 after returning from years abroad in Switzerland. Rainis remained here until his death in 1929, while Aspazija stayed until 1933 and left the house to the city of Riga to become a museum.
The house is named after the two poets Rainis and Aspazija who lived here in the late 1920s. You can sense how this space served as a meeting point for their literary and intellectual circles, reflecting their role in Latvia's cultural life.
The museum is located in Riga's old city center on Baznīcas Street and is easily accessible by public transport. The spaces are accessible for people with reduced mobility, and visitors can use audio guides or join guided tours to learn more about the poets and their surroundings.
The correspondence between Rainis and Aspazija is registered on UNESCO's list of world documentary heritage and includes about 2,500 letters written in Latvian, Russian, and German. Many letters were written on postcards, offering a glimpse into their personal relationship and daily thoughts in an intimate form.
