Rundāle Palace

Rundāle Palace is a baroque structure in Pilsrundāle, built with ornate rooms featuring detailed plasterwork and gilded surfaces. The formal gardens beyond stretch across manicured lawns with geometric patterns, flower beds, and rows of trees arranged in classical style.

The structure was designed in 1736 as a residence for the ruler of the Courland region during Russian imperial times. It became an important example of baroque architecture that shaped the building traditions of the area for generations.

The decorated halls inside tell the story of 18th-century craftsmanship through their detailed stucco work and gold leaf. These spaces come alive today when musicians perform classical concerts within the same walls.

Guided tours in multiple languages lead visitors through the interior rooms and outdoor gardens at their own pace. Wear comfortable shoes as walking through the halls and across the grounds involves covering considerable ground.

The gardens contain a collection of roses that shows how European rose varieties have changed across different periods. This living display preserves older cultivars alongside modern ones, offering a botanical perspective on horticultural history.
