Rundāle Palace Museum, Baroque history museum in Rundāle village, Latvia.
Rundāle Palace Museum is a baroque palace in southern Latvia designed by Francesco Rastrelli and filled with ornate rooms decorated in gold and white. The grounds include a large French garden with carefully laid paths and tree-lined avenues.
The palace was built between 1736 and 1768 as a summer residence for Duke Ernst Johann Biron of Courland. Its construction was a display of the Baltic nobility's political power during the Russian imperial period.
The rooms display decorative objects and furnishings that show how the ducal family and their guests lived during the 18th century. Walking through the halls, you can see how wealth and taste were expressed through art and design.
Wear comfortable shoes, as both the palace and garden require walking to explore properly. The warmer months are best for visiting, when the gardens are fuller and more details are visible throughout the grounds.
The garden underwent major restoration work and now shows authentic 18th-century French garden design principles. This reconstruction makes it one of the few examples of original baroque garden layout still visible in the region.
