Smiltenes pils, Medieval castle ruins in Smiltene, Latvia
Smiltenes pils is a medieval castle in Smiltene with four defensive walls spanning about 60 meters. The walls in the preserved southeastern section reach heights of about 5 meters, with a notable southern corner still visible today.
The Livonian Order built this fortress under Master Wilhelm von Friesheim between 1367 and 1370. Its construction followed the Order's takeover of several episcopal fortifications as they expanded their control over the Baltic region.
The fortress was transformed into a manor complex during the 19th century, when residential buildings were added to the site. This change shows how a military stronghold became a residential center for the community over time.
The ruins are easily accessible on foot and can be viewed from the surrounding grounds. Visitors should allow time to walk around the entire site and view the remaining wall sections from different angles.
This fortress ranks among Latvia's later crusader-era constructions and was built at a carefully chosen strategic location. Its transition from military stronghold to residential manor makes it an uncommon example of how such fortifications found new purpose in the region.
