Tērvete Nature Park, Nature park in Tērvete Parish, Latvia
Tērvete Nature Park is a large protected area in the Zemgale region, defined by dense pine forests and the scenic valley of the Tērvete River. The park features a network of walking paths of varying lengths and difficulty levels that pass through different landscape types and forest sections.
The area was founded in 1958 as Sun Mood Park and developed into a popular destination with organized walking trails. Latvia's State Forests took over management in 2000 and transformed it into a modern nature park.
Wooden figures scattered through the park depict characters from stories by Latvian writer Anna Brigadere, inviting visitors to engage with local storytelling traditions. These sculptures help connect nature with cultural heritage in a way that feels natural to the landscape.
The park is well equipped with information centers, restrooms, and picnic areas with grills scattered throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and check the weather, as forest trails vary in condition depending on the season.
A section called Old Pine Park contains individual trees with diameters exceeding 2 meters (6 feet) and ages approaching several centuries, making them exceptionally rare in the region. These ancient trees are difficult to find elsewhere and draw naturalists seeking to experience old-growth forest.
