Randu pļavas, Nature reserve in Limbaži district, Latvia
Randu pļavas is a nature reserve featuring coastal meadows, lagoons, and reed beds located along the Vidzeme seaside. The landscape consists of flat, open areas with water and vegetation that can be viewed from an observation tower.
The area was shaped by traditional farming practices over many generations, which created the current ecological diversity. Its designation as a protected reserve recognized this natural value and ensured its preservation.
The meadows draw bird watchers and nature lovers who come to experience the diversity of coastal birds in their natural setting. Many visitors use the observation points to quietly watch the different species throughout the seasons.
Visit during breeding season and warmer months when wildlife is most active and visible from the trails. Wear sturdy footwear and insect protection since the terrain is often wet and marshy.
In 2006, 114 different bird species were recorded here, setting a record for all of Latvia. This discovery made it an internationally important site for bird research and attracts scientists from around the world.
