The Jūrmala Open-Air Museum is an open-air museum in Jūrmala, Latvia, where old wooden houses and fishing equipment are arranged along grassy paths near the Lielupe River. The grounds hold roughly two thousand objects from coastal life, including boats, nets, tools, and anchors, with separate areas showing a fisherman’s yard and workspaces for rope making and net repair.

The museum was created in 1970 by moving original wooden buildings from fishing villages across the Latvian coast to this site. Before the resort developed, Jūrmala was a small fishing settlement where daily life depended on the sea, and the relocated homes preserve that earlier period.

In the fisherman’s yard, visitors can try twisting rope fibers and mending nets by hand, skills that still give a sense of how coastal families shared work. Seasonal craft gatherings and open workshops fill the grounds with the smell of smoked fish and the sound of old songs, turning the collection into a place where local habits are practiced rather than only displayed.

Paths are mostly flat and easy to walk, so comfortable shoes are enough for a slow visit that takes about an hour. You can combine the stop with a short walk in Ragakāpa Nature Park nearby, which is useful for stretching the outing without needing extra transport.

A wooden fishing motor vessel called March sits among the exhibits, along with a fishing boat named Undīne. Many of the houses still have their narrow windows and steep roofs, and since some old objects can be touched, visitors can feel the worn surfaces that machines could not replace.
