Benina International Airport, airport in Libya
Benina International Airport is a commercial aerodrome located in the town of Benina, near Benghazi in Libya. It features two asphalt runways, a functional terminal building with waiting areas, shops, and cafes where travelers can spend time between flights.
The airport was established in the early 1900s during Italy's control of Libya and served as a military base for Italian and German forces during World War II. It played a strategic role in the North African campaign with basic landing strips and minimal structures on desert land.
The airport takes its name from the town of Benina and serves as a vital connection point for the Benghazi region. Visitors can observe how the terminal blends functional spaces with reminders of different historical periods, shaping how people move through and use the facility.
The terminal has basic facilities including seating areas, shops, and cafes for refreshments during layovers. Visitors should allow extra time for processing at customs and baggage areas, and be prepared for occasional operational interruptions.
The airport closed for nearly three years from 2014 to 2017 due to fighting in nearby Benghazi, leaving the terminal quiet and empty. Since its reopening in 2017, it has gradually resumed flights to multiple Libyan cities and international destinations including Jordan, Tunisia, and Turkey.
