Benghazi Cathedral

Benghazi Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in central Benghazi with clear Neoclassical forms. The building features a portico with four Doric columns, two domes above the nave, and multiple oculi that illuminate the interior spaces.

Italian architects Ottavio Cabiati and Guido Ferrazza designed and constructed the cathedral between 1929 and 1939 during Italy's occupation of Libya. The building was created as a statement of European presence in the region during this colonial period.

The building demonstrates a blend of Neoclassical and Italian architectural styles that reflect its colonial-era origins. Visitors notice the European design features that stand out distinctly from local architectural traditions in the region.

The cathedral is located in central Benghazi and is relatively accessible on foot. Visitors should be aware that restoration work is ongoing at the building, which may affect access to certain areas.

Despite plans to transform it into a mosque like its counterpart in Tripoli, the building's orientation made it unsuitable for Islamic prayer direction requirements. This architectural feature ultimately preserved the structure from being repurposed.
