Wadi el Kuf Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Al Bayda, Libya

The Wadi el Kuf Bridge extends 477 meters across a deep valley, with two A-shaped pylons rising 57 meters above the roadway level.

Construction began in 1967 under architect Riccardo Morandi's direction, and the bridge opened in 1971 as part of Libya's infrastructure modernization program.

The bridge represents a significant engineering achievement in North Africa, connecting the regions of Benghazi, Al Marj, Al Bayda, Derna, and Tobruk.

The bridge deck consists of a 7.5-meter-wide reinforced concrete box with an additional 13-meter-wide slab supporting the road surface.

The structure features diagonal prestressed concrete cables instead of metal stays, a characteristic engineering solution by Morandi to eliminate vibration effects.

Vanished architectural structures of the world

This collection documents major buildings that have disappeared throughout history. It includes religious structures such as the 15th-century Porcelain Tower of Nanjing, whose glazed bricks gleamed in sunlight, as well as destroyed palaces, theaters, and public buildings from various periods and continents. The reasons for the disappearance of these structures range from warfare to natural disasters to deliberate demolition for urban redevelopment. The Palais du Trocadéro in Paris, for example, was demolished in 1937 to make way for the current Palais de Chaillot. This compilation provides insight into lost architectural achievements and the historical circumstances of their disappearance.
