Meknes, Imperial city in northern Morocco
The city stretches across elevated terrain at 546 meters, surrounded by a fortified wall system featuring nine monumental gates and four-cornered towers.
Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif transformed Meknes into Morocco's capital from 1672 to 1727, establishing an extensive palace complex with walls reaching 25 feet in thickness.
The local market displays traditional crafts, including embroidery and carpets made by women artisans from the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco.
The central location provides excellent transportation connections to major Moroccan cities through rail services linking Rabat, Fes, Tangier, and Casablanca.
The Roua stables, constructed during the imperial period, contained sufficient space to accommodate 12,000 horses within their structural confines.
