Bou Inania Madrasa, Historic madrasa in Meknes, Morocco
Bou Inania Madrasa is a medieval Quranic school in the heart of the Meknes medina, Morocco. Its rooms are arranged around a central courtyard with a marble fountain and decorated galleries, and a connected area with a water basin was used for ritual washing before prayer.
The school was founded in 1335 under the name Madrasat al-Jadida by the Marinid sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman. His son later gave it the name it carries today.
The prayer hall is lined with hand-carved stucco, cedarwood panels, and zellige tilework that Moroccan craftsmen have practiced for centuries. Walking through the courtyard, visitors can examine this work up close and see how each motif connects to the next without a single break.
The entrance passes through original copper-fitted wooden doors into a vestibule that organizes the flow through the building. Passages can be narrow in places, so comfortable footwear is a good idea and visitors should allow enough time to move through each section without rushing.
Although the school stopped functioning as a place of study long ago, the student rooms on the upper floor are still visible and give a sense of how young scholars once lived in close quarters with very little space. Each room was just large enough for one person, making daily life in the building quite different from what one might imagine.
