Friouato caves, Cave network in Taza, Morocco.
The Friouato caves form an extensive underground system near Taza with multiple interconnected chambers. Limestone formations, stalagmites, and flowing water through the passages create the landscape inside these caverns.
The first documented exploration took place in 1930 when an explorer mapped the depths of the cave system and discovered its subterranean water flow. This expedition opened the caves to further scientific study and research interest.
The cave system represents a natural landmark between the Rif and Middle Atlas mountain ranges, attracting speleologists and researchers from various countries.
Visitors should bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes since temperatures inside remain cold throughout the year. A flashlight or headlamp is necessary to navigate safely through the dark passages.
The deepest reachable points lie about 270 meters below the surface, where researchers believe underground streams connect to neighboring cave systems. Such connections between separate caverns are rare and make this location particularly interesting for cave explorers.
