Funduq Sagha, Historic caravanserai in Fez el Bali, Morocco
Funduq Sagha is a caravanserai in Fez el Bali with over 20 rooms spread across three levels arranged around a central courtyard. The galleries display carved stucco decorations on their supporting pillars.
This building was constructed in 1711 during the reign of Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif as a commercial trading center. Workshops and storage spaces were added to its functions as merchants expanded their operations over time.
The monumental entrance displays traditional Moroccan craftsmanship through detailed tilework and carved stucco. An Arabic inscription marks when this building was established.
The building is accessed through a central courtyard entrance, and finding it within the medina requires navigating narrow winding streets. The restored structure welcomes visitors who want to see traditional architecture from several centuries.
Archaeological excavations during restoration work between 2013 and 2017 uncovered remains of houses from the Marinid period beneath the structure. These discoveries revealed that the site had been occupied for centuries before the current building was erected.
