As-Sunna Mosque, Historical mosque in central Rabat, Morocco.
As-Sunna Mosque is a religious building in central Rabat with approximately 5500 square meters of floor area and a square layout. A rectangular courtyard is surrounded by covered galleries and prayer halls, while nine entrance gates provide access to different sections.
Sultan Moulay Mohammed ben Abdallah had the building constructed in 1785 when Rabat served as Morocco's imperial capital. The mosque underwent major renovation in the 1960s.
The mosque displays traditional Moroccan architectural elements such as ornamental pavilions near courtyard entrances and carved decorative patterns on the minaret facades. These embellishments reflect the craftsmanship typical of religious structures from this era.
Access is provided through nine different entrances, some reserved specifically for women and the imam. Its location near Avenue Mohammed V makes the mosque easy to find and accessible.
During a major renovation in the 1960s, the minaret was relocated from its original position in the northwest corner to the southwest corner. This relocation was done to better align the building with the main boulevard nearby.
