Chișinău International Airport, International airport in Chișinău, Moldova
Chișinău International Airport is a hub 13 kilometers (8 miles) southeast of the city center with a runway measuring 3590 meters (11778 feet) in length and several passenger areas. The facility includes a main hall with check-in counters, security checkpoints, and waiting rooms spread across multiple levels.
The facility began operations in 1960 and expanded gradually over decades to accommodate increasing passenger numbers. A major modernization took place in 2002 when a Turkish company carried out extensive renovations to boost capacity.
The name comes from the nearby village, though the terminal itself sits in an open area marked by agricultural fields and low-rise construction. Travelers often notice the mix of both Cyrillic and Latin scripts on signs, reflecting the bilingual nature of the country.
Buses and taxis run regularly between the terminal and the city center, with the trip taking around half an hour. Travelers should allow time for security checks, as procedures can take longer during peak travel periods.
An observation terrace opened in 2006 allows visitors to watch departing and arriving aircraft up close. The platform also offers a view over the surrounding fields and the low skyline of the region.
