Curchi Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Curchi, Moldova.
Curchi Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex in the Orhei region comprising five churches and multiple buildings for monks and daily operations. The grounds also feature an orchard and a stone water reservoir that remains visible today.
The monastery was founded in 1775 by brothers Iordache and Mihail, who initially built a modest wooden hermitage. Over time, the complex expanded with stone structures and became an important religious center in the region.
The Birth of the Virgin Mary Church features neobyzantine design with soaring domes and ornate details. Visitors can also see the Saint Nicholas Church, where classical and baroque architectural elements blend together.
The monastery is located roughly 55 kilometers southwest of Chisinau and can be reached by local transport. Visitors should know that religious services take place regularly and the grounds are actively used by a monastic community, so respectful conduct is important.
During Soviet times, the religious complex was converted into a psychiatric hospital before reclaiming its original purpose after Moldova became independent. This unexpected history is now part of understanding the site and its importance to the local community.
