Codrii Tigheci

Codrii Tigheci is a protected forest reserve in Cantemir District featuring many plant species and ancient trees across its valleys and slopes. The terrain varies from gentle lowlands to steep hillsides, creating different growing conditions throughout the area.

The forest experienced significant decline after 1800 as agricultural expansion reduced Moldova's woodland coverage. What once covered most of the region shrunk dramatically to a fraction of its original extent.

The term 'codru' comes from ancient Paleo-Balkan languages and refers to the forests that shaped Moldova's landscape for centuries. Locals still use this word to describe the woodlands that were once central to regional life and identity.

The reserve has walking paths where visitors can observe local plants and wildlife while respecting protected areas. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain includes steep slopes and uneven ground.

The reserve functions as a research site where scientists study how ecosystems change and how environmental factors affect local species over time. Researchers use the area to understand natural patterns and ecosystem responses to external pressures.
