Cuciurgan Reservoir, reservoir in Moldova
The Cuciurgan Reservoir is a large water body on the Kuchurhan River, situated on the border between Ukraine and Moldova. The water extends about 20 kilometers and is held back by a dam built north of where the river joins the Dniester, with the water surface covering roughly 27 square kilometers.
The reservoir was created during the Soviet era by damming the Kuchurhan River to manage water resources and supply water for electricity generation in nearby areas. A natural shallow lake or liman system existed previously in the southern part of the Kuchurhan valley and was incorporated into the new reservoir.
The reservoir is recognized as an Important Bird Area, and many waterbird species use it for resting and feeding, especially during migration seasons. Visitors can observe ducks, herons, and other birds inhabiting the water and shoreline, making it a natural gathering place for wildlife.
The reservoir is easily accessible by road from nearby towns and villages, and visitors should bring water and supplies, especially for longer activities during warm months. The area is open and easy to walk along the shoreline or for birdwatching, but there are no formal facilities on site.
The reservoir incorporates water from a previous natural liman system that existed in the southern valley floor before the dam was built. This integration of an existing water body with modern construction creates a place where older and newer elements meet.
