Moračnik Monastery, Orthodox monastery on Moračnik Island, Lake Skadar National Park, Montenegro
Moracnik is an Orthodox monastery located on an island within Lake Skadar in Montenegro, centered on a domed stone church dedicated to the Holy Virgin. A tower-like residential building stands beside the church to accommodate the monastic community.
The monastery was founded between 1403 and 1417, as documented in a charter when Balša III granted the community a salt evaporation pond for its sustenance. This early establishment marked its emergence as an important religious site in the medieval region.
The monastery functions as an active spiritual center where monks maintain Orthodox Christian practices through daily prayers and rituals that shape life on the island. Visitors can observe how these traditions continue to define the community and its connection to the surrounding landscape.
Reaching the monastery requires traveling by boat across Lake Skadar, and spring and autumn offer the calmest water conditions for the journey. Planning a visit during these seasons makes for a more comfortable crossing.
During the Montenegrin-Ottoman conflict of 1853, three brothers from the village of Godinje defended the monastery against attack. Their brave stand became part of the site's enduring memory during a turbulent period.
