Rumija

Rumija is a mountain range that rises between Lake Skadar and the Adriatic Sea, dominating the landscape of southern Montenegro. The massif features multiple peaks, with the highest reaching 1,594 meters and forming a dramatic natural divider between the lake and coastal areas.

The area experienced destruction during Ottoman expansion in the 16th century, when religious structures were damaged. A modern metal church was installed by helicopter in 2005 to rebuild what had been lost centuries earlier.

The mountain holds deep meaning for multiple faith communities who gather here regularly. The annual Cross of Jovan Vladimir procession in August draws Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Muslims to the summit, reflecting how this place connects people across religious boundaries.

Hikers typically start from the nearby town of Bar, where several marked trails branch toward the summit. Most visitors should expect a climb lasting several hours across changing terrain and weather conditions.

The mountain stands as the southernmost peak of Montenegro with notable elevation prominence visible from both the lake and sea sides. This geographical distinction gives it an isolated character that many visitors find striking when they reach the summit.
