Bitola Zoo

Bitola Zoo spreads across sloping terrain with separate areas designed for different animal species including tigers, lions, bears, and various primates. The facility houses around 200 animals from approximately 40 different species.

The facility opened in 1950 with assistance from zoos in Skopje, Zagreb, Belgrade, and Subotica to build its initial animal collection. This regional cooperation helped establish the foundation for its operation.

The zoo serves as a community space where visitors learn about wildlife and conservation efforts. It functions as an educational destination that welcomes school groups and families interested in understanding animal behavior and protection.

The zoo sits on sloping ground, which means visitors encounter different elevations while walking, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The path through the grounds naturally goes up and down as you move through different sections.

The sloping ground creates a visual illusion that makes the zoo feel larger than its actual size. This natural angle of the terrain plays with visitor perception in an unexpected way.
