Church of St. Sophia
Church of St. Sophia, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Ohrid, North Macedonia
The Church of St. Sophia stands on Lake Ohrid's shore, featuring Byzantine architecture with characteristic domed basilica design and medieval frescoes.
Built in 1035 on the foundation of a 5th-century Roman church, this structure served as the seat of the Archbishopric of Ohrid until the 18th century.
The interior walls display frescoes from the 11th to 14th centuries, depicting biblical narratives and early representations of saints Cyril and Clement.
The church opens daily for visitors, with guided tours available in multiple languages to explain the architectural elements and religious significance.
During Ottoman rule, the church transformed into a mosque, with its frescoes covered by plaster and minarets added to the north chapel structure.
