Sultan Murad Mosque

Sultan Murad Mosque is a rectangular structure in Skopje's Old Bazaar organized into three interior sections separated by stone columns. The ceiling features coffered wooden panels, and a columned porch with four supports frames the entrance.

Sultan Murad II commissioned the construction of this religious building in 1436, establishing it as the first mosque in the Balkan region. The construction replaced an earlier monastic complex and marked a turning point in the area's religious history.

The mosque serves as an active prayer space and spiritual center for the community in the Old Bazaar. The two burial chambers within the complex reflect its role as a sacred place for local families across generations.

The building sits on a gentle hill in the central part of the Old Bazaar near the clock tower that defines the skyline. The location allows easy foot access as you navigate through the winding lanes of the bazaar.

The interior layout mirrors a three-naved Christian basilica, reflecting how the structure adapted to the site of a former monastery. This unusual design shows how different architectural traditions converged when the place was transformed.
