Matka Canyon

The Matka Canyon extends across 5,000 hectares of steep cliffs along the Treska River, forming North Macedonia's largest artificial lake with underwater caves.

The canyon contains multiple medieval religious structures, including Saint Andrew's Monastery from 1388 and Matka Monastery constructed during the 14th century.

Among the canyon's ten caves, Vrelo Cave houses distinctive rock formations, such as the Pine Cone stalactite, recognized in the New7Wonders project.

Visitors reach the canyon from Skopje through regular bus services, private vehicles, or organized tours, with the journey taking between 30 to 50 minutes.

The canyon maintains 77 butterfly species and houses the venomous horned viper, while twenty percent of the plant species exist nowhere else.
