Vrelo Cave, Show cave in Matka Canyon, North Macedonia
Vrelo Cave sits on the right bank of the Treska River within Matka Canyon. Two underground lakes lie here, connected by passages lined with natural limestone shapes throughout.
This cave was converted into a show cave in the early 2000s for public exploration. The underground boat tour system transformed what was once isolated into something visitors could experience directly.
The cave functions as an educational center where visitors learn about regional geological processes and the formation of underground water systems.
You travel by boat through underground waterways to explore the lakes and rock formations inside. Sturdy shoes and light layers work best, as the cave stays cool and damp throughout.
The two underground lakes here drop to depths of 15 and 18 meters, placing them among Europe's deepest cave lakes. This remarkable depth makes the site stand out for those interested in subterranean water systems.
