Matka Monastery

Matka Monastery is a Byzantine monastery in Matka Canyon, North Macedonia, located on the left bank of the Treska River. The building follows a cross plan with a trefoil apse and demonstrates the architectural style of its period.

The monastery was built in medieval times and later restored in 1497 by a woman named Milica, who carried out extensive repairs. Her restoration work preserved the structure and added new artistic elements to its interior.

The interior walls display religious frescoes showing scenes from Christ's life and holy figures. These paintings reveal how faith and art came together in medieval religious practice.
