Matka Monastery, Byzantine monastery in Matka Canyon, North Macedonia.
The monastery complex stands on the left bank of the Treska River, featuring traditional Byzantine architecture with a cross plan and trefoil apse design.
In 1497, a woman named Milica found the monastery without a roof and initiated extensive renovations, including new frescoes and the construction of a portico.
The interior walls display detailed frescoes divided into three sections, depicting religious figures such as Archangels Michael and Gabriel, along with scenes from Christ's life.
The monastery lies 17 kilometers southwest of Skopje and provides access to numerous hiking trails and water activities in the surrounding Matka Canyon region.
The monastery houses preserved inscriptions from its original construction period, making it a valuable source for understanding medieval Macedonian architecture and artistry.
