Nemegt Formation

The Nemegt Formation is a geological deposit in the Gobi Desert containing river channel sediments and layers rich with fossils from the Cretaceous era. These stratified layers hold bones, teeth, and plant remains that reveal what life was like millions of years ago in this region.

The formation developed roughly 71 to 69 million years ago when the climate was wet and river systems flowed through the region. At that time, this area was a living landscape full of dinosaurs and other animals, very different from the dry desert it is today.

The site links Mongolia's prehistoric past with modern paleontology through international research collaborations that gather scientists from many countries. These ongoing projects help the global scientific community better understand the ancient life that once flourished in this region.

The site sits in a remote desert location and requires specialized vehicles and experienced guides to reach it safely. Visitors should prepare for harsh conditions and understand that access may be limited depending on weather and local regulations.

Complete dinosaur skeletons have been discovered here, including the fearsome Tarbosaurus bataar and the unusual Deinocheirus mirificus with its mysterious long arms. Equally striking are fossilized tree remains that show this region was once forested before becoming desert.
