Mariam Al-Batool Mosque, Mosque in Paola, Malta
Located on Corradino Hill, this limestone mosque features Islamic architecture with a 31.5-meter minaret and a dome rising against the Maltese skyline.
The foundation stone was laid by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 1978, and the mosque opened its doors to the public in 1982 at a cost of 900,000 Maltese lira.
The mosque complex includes the Mariam Al-Batool School, Islamic Cultural Centre, and Mediterranean Garden, serving as a center for Muslim education and gatherings.
With an interior area of 225 square meters, the mosque accommodates 500 worshippers and maintains specific protocols including shoe removal and gender-separated prayer areas.
This structure stands as the only officially recognized mosque in Malta since 1702, when a previous mosque existed within a prison building for Turkish slaves.
