Żonqor Battery, Artillery battery in Marsaskala, Malta
Żonqor Battery is an artillery fortification in Marsaskala with a polygonal structure surrounded by a deep ditch around its perimeter. The installation includes underground ammunition storage chambers positioned beneath ground level and was built with local stone.
British military engineers built this defensive fortification between 1882 and 1886 as part of the island's defense strategy. It represented one of several installations developed during the late colonial period to protect the harbor.
The name refers to a local area in the region. The construction using local limestone reflects the practical building methods of the era.
The site currently serves as agricultural land and is closed to visitors for access. You can view the outer walls and structure from nearby walking paths that run around the area.
The guns installed at the battery proved ineffective for defending the bay. Their range was insufficient to cover the full extent of the area they were meant to protect.
