Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll, Natural atoll in the northern Maldives.
Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll is a ring-shaped formation with numerous coral reefs and shallow lagoons spread across its expanse. The waters contain diverse marine environments and underwater landscapes for exploration.
The first accurate mapping of the atoll took place in the 19th century through British surveys that created detailed navigation charts. These early surveys established the foundation for understanding Maldivian waters.
The name Maalhosmadulu comes from the Dhivehi language and reflects how Maldivian communities traditionally named atolls after important local islands.
Access is by domestic flights to nearby islands, followed by speedboat rides to resorts and guesthouses scattered throughout. The best time to visit is during dry season when conditions are more stable and predictable.
The southwestern corner holds a particularly high concentration of coral patches that make it a marine observation hotspot. This area attracts both experienced divers and snorkelers eager to explore the varied coral formations.
