Plateau State, Administrative region in north-central Nigeria.
Plateau State is an administrative region in north-central Nigeria with Jos as its capital. The territory consists of seventeen local government areas spread across a large area of hills, valleys, and open plains.
This administrative territory was created on February 3, 1976, when the former Benue-Plateau State was split into two separate regions. Since then Jos has grown into the political and economic center of this new unit.
The name refers to the elevated landform that defines much of this territory and shapes its cooler weather. Visitors today see villages and towns where people farm the land and sell fruit, vegetables, and handmade goods in open-air markets.
The territory can be visited throughout the year thanks to a moderate climate that is milder than in the lower-lying parts of the country. Travelers should pack weatherproof clothing as temperatures can drop noticeably during evening hours and early mornings.
Beneath the surface lie deposits of tin, lead, marble, and other minerals that have been mined for decades. These underground resources shape the landscape through old mines and extraction sites visible along the roads.
