Ekiti State, Administrative state in southwestern Nigeria
Ekiti is a state in southwestern Nigeria that borders Ondo, Osun, and Kogi, covering tropical regions with hills and forests. The capital Ado-Ekiti sits in the center of an area known for its agricultural land and green valleys.
The territory officially formed in October 1996 when the Abacha government carved it out of Ondo. During the 19th century, the region was the site of the long Kiriji War between the Ekiti Confederacy and the Ibadan Kingdom.
The population of Ekiti State maintains strong educational values, producing numerous professors and scholars while supporting multiple universities and academic institutions.
The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads are easier to travel and temperatures remain moderate. Visitors should check with local authorities about current conditions, as some rural areas become harder to reach during the rainy months.
The Obeche tree was officially named the state tree in March 2022, highlighting the importance of this timber species to the local environment. The region also produces a high number of academics, giving it a reputation as a place of learning.
