Osun-Osogbo Grove, Sacred grove in Osogbo, Nigeria
The grove extends over 75 hectares along the Osun River banks, featuring shrines, sculptures, and ancient trees within a protected forest area.
The site faced decline in the 1950s until Austrian artist Susanne Wenger established the New Sacred Art movement to protect the land and restore traditional practices.
The grove contains numerous sculptures and sanctuaries dedicated to Osun, the Yoruba river deity, representing centuries of spiritual connection to nature.
Local guides provide tours of the grove during daylight hours, with additional security measures and specific entry protocols during the August festival period.
The annual festival includes a procession led by Arugba, a woman from royal lineage who carries ceremonial offerings through specific paths in the sacred forest.
