The settlement originated as Loppesheim in 945, developing around a church built in 800, with the current Petrus and Paulus Church dating from 1217.
The village maintains protected status for its historical center, featuring the largest parish church in the Fivelingo region and numerous preserved 19th-century buildings.
The village offers various amenities including a swimming pool, sports facilities, two primary schools, shops, and regular train connections to Groningen and Delfzijl.
The area contains a saltwater swimming pool established in 1933, utilizing ancient underground saltwater pumped directly from a natural well.
