Western Scheldt Tunnel, Road tunnel in Zeeland, Netherlands.
The Western Scheldt Tunnel is a road crossing that passes beneath the Scheldt estuary, linking the municipalities of Borsele and Terneuzen in Zeeland. The passage consists of two separate traffic tubes, one for each direction of travel.
The crossing opened in 2003 and replaced two car ferry lines that had operated for decades across the waterway. Its construction marked a turning point for regional transport and eliminated dependence on ferry services.
The tunnel crossing changed everyday life for people on both sides of the waterway, cutting travel times and simplifying daily routines. Local residents noticed that a journey that once involved variable wait times became predictable and straightforward.
Drivers should expect toll collection points at both ends where payment is required for passage. The two separate tubes allow traffic to keep moving even if one tube needs maintenance work.
The tunnel runs roughly 60 meters below the shipping lane Pas van Terneuzen, making it one of the deepest underpasses in the Netherlands. This considerable depth was necessary to allow heavy vessel traffic to continue flowing above the route.
