Bilthoven, Railway village in De Bilt, Netherlands
Bilthoven is a village in the municipality of De Bilt in Utrecht province that grew around its railway station, which became the hub of the community. Today it consists of residential neighborhoods with detached houses spreading outward from the station, interspersed with open green spaces.
The settlement began in 1843 when the Utrecht-Amersfoort railway line was built and a station was established at this location. The name Bilthoven was officially adopted in 1917 after the local council decided to rename the railway station.
The village became known in the early 1900s as a center for peace work when several international organizations chose to base themselves here. This connection to global peace efforts remains part of how locals see their community today.
The village has a well-connected railway station with regular services to nearby cities and towns. Visitors should know that it is primarily residential, so shops and dining options are concentrated in specific areas rather than spread throughout.
Bilthoven is home to De Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap, an experimental school operating since 1926 that uses an innovative teaching approach. Over the decades this school has educated some remarkable students from prominent families in Dutch society.
