De Nolet, Municipal monument windmill in Schiedam, Netherlands.
De Nolet is a stellingmill in Schiedam, in the Netherlands, built and operated by the Nolet Distillery to generate wind power. It takes the form of a smock mill, with a rotating cap at the top and a fixed lower body, and stands close to the distillery buildings.
The mill was built in 2005 by the Nolet family, who have been distilling spirits in Schiedam for several generations. The project was driven by a desire to cover the distillery's energy needs using wind power while keeping the form of a traditional Dutch mill.
De Nolet looks like a traditional Dutch smock mill from the outside, with its rotating cap turning to face the wind. In practice, the energy it produces goes directly to the Nolet Distillery next door, which makes Ketel One vodka and gin.
The mill stands on Hoofdstraat in Schiedam and can be reached easily on foot from the town center. Because it is an active facility, access inside is not always available, but the exterior is fully visible from the street.
Although the mill looks like a classic Dutch structure, it is officially listed as a municipal monument, which is rare for a building erected in 2005. This recognition shows that even recent constructions can earn protected status in the Netherlands when they follow a longstanding local tradition.
